Day trip: From historical Pula to romantic Venice

A ferry from Pula to Venice is probably the best option for a day trip to Venice. Most of the travel agencies in Premantura and Pula offer this trip.



The Venice lagoon lies on the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy. The freshwater lagoon stretches from the Po River in the south and the north of the river Piava. The name is derived from the ancient Veneti people who inhabited the region in the 10th century BC.

The city is still the capital of the Venetian Republic. Venice has been known as “La Dominant”, “Serenissima”, “Queen of the Adriatic”, “City of Water”, “City of Masks”, “City of Bridges”, “Floating City”. The city is described by writers and journalists as arguably the most beautiful city built by human or as the most romantic city in Europe. Venice has a rich and diverse architectural style.

There are many attractions as St Mark’s Basilica, the Grand Canal, Piazza San Marco, the Rialto Bridge. Venice has its famous museums and galleries: Cà Pesaro Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Oriental Art, Peggy Guggenheim Museum-Venice. Venice has also one of the major shopping centers in Italy, there are original stores like Louis Vuitton and Ermenegildo Zegna, and many others. Near the city, there are two important airports, Marco Polo International Airport and Treviso Airport in Treviso, 30 km from Venice. Also there is an important transport hub of regional and international trains.

How to get from Pula to Venice?

This is probably the best option for a day trip from Pula to Venice. Most of the travel agencies in Premantura and Pula offer day trips to Venice. Some of the ferry operators that offer these trips are Adriatic Lines, Venezia Lines, Adriatica. The ferries have full equipment with air condition, bar, etc. The ferry leaves around 7:30 am in Pula and arrives in Venice around 11:00 am.  Price for a one-day trip from Pula to Venice by a ferry, is in all agencies around 65 Euro for adults and 33 Euro for children. A tour of Venice, includes St. Mark Square with its Basilica – the best example of Byzantine architecture, bell tower, rialto bridge and Doge’s luxurious castle. Further the excursion goes on with a walk across the Accademia Bridge, admiring the splendid architecture of its palace. After the tour, you have free time to explore the city or take a gondola ride or lunch in one of the restaurants.

If you get off the catamaran and want to take a trip through the Venetian streets on your own hand, don’t forget to inform yourself about the departure hours, so you can get there on time and go back to „Our beautiful“.

By car or bus

Venice, to the mainland of Italy is linked by three separate areas: the bus station Piazzale Roma, Tronchetto and train station Santa Lucia. These are the only parts of Venice that can be reached by car. Vehicles can park in Piazzale Roma or Tronchetti, but note that parking in Venice can be very expensive.

Road distance between Premantura and Venice is 290 kilometers, and for the most part it is going through the highway. Of this distance, 243 kilometers is driving on the highway, or the Istrian Y (Istarski ipsilon), which was completed in 2011. Part of the route that goes through Slovenia applies to local roads. The trip from Pula to the “City of Bridges” takes about 4 hours in one direction and you have to pay a toll fee for the highway which costs 120 kuna (15 Euro) for cars. There is also an option to avoid traveling on the highway and paying for the toll fee. This is the road which goes through Istria and Italy, but this are mostly local roads which will make u travel more, even six hours. This way can be even longer if you are traveling in the middle of the season when there is more traffic on the roads.

The bus from Pula travels through the whole year and the price for one ticket is around 200 kuna (26 Euro). If you want to visit Venice with overnight stays, then is traveling by car or bus a good option. Venice is a city that is mostly focused on tourism, so they have a really great selection of accommodation.
